PIRI WEEPU SCORES SUPREME AT 2011 MAORI SPORTS AWARDS

Another champion All Black has scored the supreme Alby Pryor award for top Maori sportsperson for the second year in a row.

Rugby World Cup victor Piri Weepu took out the Senior Maori Sportsman title before being named Albie Pryor Memorial Maori Sportsperson of the Year at an Auckland black-tie ceremony tonight (December 3 2011).

Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa is hosting the 21st National Maori Sports Awards at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau.

In an article in UK newspaper The Telegraph on the eve of the Rugby World Cup final – ‘Rugby World Cup 2011: Haka leader Piri Weepu becomes the focus of attention in New Zealand's battle’ – rugby writer Brendan Gallagher wrote:

“He not only represents the New Zealand; he is the Maori heart and soul of an All Blacks team, an individual who brings great pride in the considerable Maori hinterland of New Zealand rugby.

“The way he steadied the New Zealand ship has seen him morph into a superman figure in the adoring local press and poignancy was added to the Weepu story when he walked off the pitch after kicking seven penalties to defeat the Pumas only to be told that his much loved grandfather, Billy, had just died.

“He jetted down to Wellington and on to his home village of Wainuiomata to help organise the funeral but returned in time for the semi-final against Australia. This man is everywhere.”

All Black Hosea Gear took out the supreme prize in 2010.

The annual event – established by the late Albie Pryor – fosters, promotes and encourages Maori sportspeople in the pursuit of excellence.

The award is a commitment by event organisers Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa to work constructively with the media to encourage more positive reporting on Maori sports and to improve the depth and quality of Maori sports reporting.

Previous winners include Black Inc Media for the Maori rugby television documentary series, Beneath the Maori Moon (2010); Maori Television current affairs programme, Native Affairs, for a special Maori rugby episode (2009); and two-time winner Toa TV for the sports entertainment show, Hyundai CODE (2008), and a documentary on Maori surf star Airini Mason (2007).

AUSTRALIAN IDOL WINNER HEADLINES MAORI SPORTS AWARDS

Australian Idol winner Stan Walker will return to New Zealand for the first time since his success to perform at the prestigious 2009 MAORI SPORTS AWARDS screening on Maori Television on Sunday December 6 at 9.00 PM.

The 19-year-old soulful Maori singer – born in Melbourne, raised in New Zealand and living in Queensland – will perform at the black-tie ceremony at the TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre in Manukau on Saturday December 5.

As well as this year’s Australian Idol, the entertainment line-up will include Whakatane singer-songwriter Maisey Rika; Jo Hopkins aka ‘Chickey’ from the Patea Maori Club; Roland Williams who is the 2009 winner of Maori Television’s karaoke competition, Homai Te Pakipaki; world champion hip hop dance crew ReQuest; and reggae band Box Juice.

Walker, who won a Sony recording contract, AUS $200,000 artist development fund and a car, will be accompanied on the trip with his mother, April, and his brother, Michael Anderson, who will back him up on guitar.

Dick Garratt, the executive director of Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust which hosts the annual awards ceremony, says the world-class entertainment complements the world-class field of finalists which includes sports stars such as Benji Marshall and Temepara George.

The supreme winners of the Albie Pryor Memorial Maori Sportsperson of the Year for the past two years – axeman Jason Wynyard and rower Storm Uru – head up another impressive list of nine Maori World Champion awardees for 2009.

The ceremony will also honour the late Margaret Te Kahurangi (Meg) Matangi MBE with a posthumous induction to the Maori Sports Hall of Fame. Matangi was captain of the first ever New Zealand women's basketball team (now known as netball) in 1938.

“Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa was founded by the late Albie Pryor who had a vision of promoting and encouraging Maori athletes in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen sports,” Dick Garratt says.

“Stan Walker’s amazing success in Australia is an inspiration to all New Zealanders and I am sure Albie would be proud to see this calibre of entertainment take to the stage at this year’s event.”

BLUES TRAIN AT ANNUAL TAMARIKI SPORTS DAY

Members of the Auckland Blues rugby side will train alongside more than 1200 youngsters at the Tamariki Sports and Cultural Day – Nga Tamariki o Te Ra – next week (2/12).

The event is staged by the organisers of the annual Maori Sports Awards for children aged eight to 12 years from kura kaupapa Maori or Maori language immersion schools from throughout Auckland. South Auckland's Te Kura Kaupapa Maori a Rohe o Mangere will again host the tamariki day at House Park Reserve in central Mangere from 9.45am to 2pm on Thursday, December 2.

Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa executive director Richard (Dick) Garratt says a major highlight will be an appearance by the NPC team as well as the opportunity for youngsters to mix with elite Maori athletes and role models. The tamariki day promotes healthy lifestyles through traditional sporting activities, the revival of traditional Maori games and the demonstration of Maori weaponry, says Mr Garratt.

Some 23 kura kaupapa have been invited with children provided with bus transport, t-shirts, bandanas, food, refreshments and many other giveaways.

"The vision of our founder, the late Albie Pryor is growing in strength every year as we cater for the revival and participation of hakinakina Maori - or Maori sports - for our young people. It will also create opportunities for kura kaupapa Maori to host this event in the future."

The Land Transport Safety Authority (LTSA) is a major sponsor of this year's Maori Sports Awards and Tamariki Sports and Cultural Day along with the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), Alcohol Liquor Advisory Council (ALAC), Auahi Kore (Smokefree), Ministry of Education, Sky City Community Trust and the Mad Butcher.

The official awards ceremony is being held at the Auckland Showgrounds on Saturday, December 4.

MAORI TELEVISION TO BROADCAST NATIONAL MAORI SPORTS AWARDS

After showing commitment to Maori sporting greats through broadcasting the recent Maori Regional Sports Awards, Maori Television is stepping up to the plate and broadcasting the national Trillian Trust Maori Sports Awards this Sunday December 5 at the prime time of 6.00 PM.

The awards are held both to foster, promote and encourage Maori sports people in the pursuit of excellence in their chosen fields and to honour the sporting achievements of outstanding Maori sporting talent.

Nominations have been received for the following categories – Maori Sports Administrator, Maori Umpire / Referee, Disabled Maori Sports Person, Maori Sports Coach, Junior Maori Sportswoman, Junior Maori Sportsman, Maori Sports Team, Maori World Champions, Senior Maori Sportswoman, Senior Maori Sportsman, Maori Sports Media Award and a Community Initiative Award.

Furthermore, the awards organiser – Te Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust – will be presenting scholarships to Maori who are actively participating in sport, sport coaching, umpiring, refereeing and sport administration. Full or part-time students or athletes seeking tertiary education to enhance their sports career will be presented with one of four scholarships being offered in association with Sfrito (Sport, Fitness and Recreation Industry Training Organisation), the Auckland Institute of Technology, the Auckland Institute of Technology and the Manukau Institute of Technology.

This 2004 Maori Sports Awards are being held at the Auckland Showgrounds on December 4 and the ceremony will be hosted by Ngarimu Daniels and Scott Morrison.
This year, the theme is to honour past Taane (Men) Maori Champions – “Te Rongo-Tu-Taua a Maui”. Aligning the theme with the iconic Maori ancestor Maui is a deliberate push to strive for self-confidence, to be influential when confronted by barriers and to take up challenges.

As a result, the awards will see the first male inductees into the trust’s Maori Sports Hall of Fame – both living and past. Those past on whose great sporting memories will be revered include Joseph (Joe) Warbrick, Arapeta (Opai) Asher, George Nepia, Tori Reid and Albie Pryor. Meanwhile, living legends Patrick (Pat) Walsh, Manga Emery, Sid Going, Waka Nathan, Mackie Herewini, Bill Kini and Phillip Orchard will also be honoured during the evening.

Tohu Taakaro o Aotearoa Charitable Trust chairman Dick Garratt says the awards are one of few opportunities Maori have to acknowledge sporting achievements amongst Maori. “These awards are taonga for our professional Maori sporting community and they also provide strong benchmarks for our upcoming rangatahi sportspeople to aspire to. We are delighted that Maori Television is broadcasting coverage of the Maori Sports Awards,” he says.

Tune into Maori Television to view some past and present Maori sporting greats with coverage of the Maori Sports Awards on Sunday December 5 at 6.00 PM.
